Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: A Journey of Reflection and Celebration

Lawrence Hum, MD
President of Care Transformation and Innovation at TeamHealth

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month) stands as a vibrant testament to the rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and histories woven by Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. It recognizes the contributions and achievements of individuals and communities with roots in Asia and the Pacific Islands.

The month of May was chosen for AAPI Heritage Month because it commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843. Throughout AAPI Heritage Month, we can advance equity by advocating for inclusive policies, fostering understanding, and supporting goals and objectives that promote diversity and respect for all individuals.

As we embrace this month-long celebration, we delve into the personal journey of Lawrence Hum, MD, President of Care Transformation and Innovation at TeamHealth, to understand the profound impact of heritage, family, and kindness.

Roots of Identity: Family, Culture, and Community

As the son of Chinese immigrants, my heritage is deeply rooted in the values of family unity and collective support, which are cornerstones of the Chinese culture. Growing up in a Chinese household in the diverse melting pot of Oakland, California, the concept of family extended far beyond the immediate nuclear unit. My cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents were not just relatives; they played a very present and active role in my daily life. That family, which now includes my wife Jane, an OB/GYN physician, and our two college-age children, Jacob and Madeleine, has provided invaluable lessons of mutual respect, empathy, and responsibility, shaping my identity as a physician and community leader.

Embracing a Legacy of Kindness

The legacy of my late father, Richard Hum, remains a guiding light in my life. His unwavering dedication to kindness left an indelible mark on my values and behaviors. Witnessing his compassion in every interaction profoundly influenced my approach to patient care. His example serves as a daily reminder that kindness transcends cultural and language barriers, fostering connections and healing.

Empowering the Future: AAPI Heritage Month as a Catalyst for Change

In my life, AAPI Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and triumphs of those who paved the way for future generations. It is a time to celebrate our resilience and potential, while also acknowledging the challenges faced by immigrants and minorities. Through promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, I strive to amplify the voices of the AAPI community, fostering a culture of celebration and empowerment.

Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion

In my role at TeamHealth, I lead strategic initiatives focused on modernizing care delivery while championing diversity and inclusion. Recognizing the nuanced backgrounds of each patient, I ensure that initiatives in care transformation prioritize inclusivity, thereby enhancing healthcare access and treatment outcomes for all. At TeamHealth, I feel supported and valued for my perspective and am confident in the company’s commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.

A Vision for the Future

As we navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving world, I remain optimistic about the future of healthcare and diversity within the industry. With TeamHealth’s steadfast dedication to inclusivity, I envision a future where every individual, regardless of background, feels valued and empowered to contribute. As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month and beyond, let us embrace the spirit of inclusion, compassion, and celebration, honoring the diverse tapestry of humanity that enriches our collective journey.
