By Dr. Michele Riley-Campbell, DO
I love meaningful work. As an emergency physician, I have the opportunity to do good and ease suffering every day. I am also very passionate about service and volunteerism. My life has been so enriched by volunteer experiences over many years. The opportunity to be a part of the EMPACT family is a great joy. Michele Riley-Campbell, DO, is a TeamHealth emergency physician at St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Wash. Dr. Riley-Campbell is also the medical program director for EMPACT Northwest, a charitable organization comprised of medical professionals providing disaster relief, medical education and ongoing medical aid to communities in need.
I get to serve and volunteer with other local professionals, some of whom I interact with at my “day” job, in a completely different setting. The shared experience of our sweating, struggling, laughing, and crying with and for our patients in post-disaster or medically underserved areas cannot be quantified. We are all changed; we are stronger, we are wiser, we are kinder, and we are inspired to pack-up and go again to see what good can be done. I cherish the words of Mohandas Gandhi, “In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”
